HENRY DAVID THOREAU fdc mail art

Henry David Thoreau (1817 – 1862), was a philosopher, writer and american poet.

He was a close friend of some of the main members of the transcendentalism which, however, he will never part. He was influenced in particular by Ralph Waldo Emerson which then moved to process his own thoughts that deviates from transcendentalism denying idealism outside of immanence. Nature is not a simple tool to Thoreau to achieve the knowledge of higher order ideals, but the ultimate object of philosophical practice, a source of well-being and existential solution.

He is mainly known for the autobiographical masterpiece Walden, or Life in the Woods, a reflection on man’s relationship with nature, and the essay Civil Disobedience in which he argues that it is permissible not to respect the rules when they go against the conscience and man’s rights, thus inspiring the first movements of protest and nonviolent resistance.

July 12, 2017 is the bicentennial of Thoreau’s Birth.

The 16th stamp in the Distinguished Americans series honors Robert Panara, an influential teacher and a pioneer in the field of deaf studies. During his 40-year teaching career, Panara inspired generations of students with his powerful use of American Sign Language. He taught at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. for nearly 20 years and at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (part of the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York state). Art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamp with an existing photograph by Mark Benjamin, official photographer of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) in Rochester.

The stamp features a 2009 photograph by Mark Benjamin, official photographer of the NTID. Panara is shown signing the word “respect.”  Source: http://www.stampnewsnow.com/
